Nearby are the Iguassu Falls, perhaps the third most spectacular falls in the world after the Victoria Falls and Niagara. Iguassu means in the local language ‘big water’. The falls are on the Iguazu River and have a 2.7 kilometre edge and are 82 metres high and feature the Devil’s Throat ‘Garganta del Diablo’ a narrow chasm. The falls are on the Iguazu River and 23 kilometers upstream from it’s confluence with the Parana River. They are on the borders of Paraguay, Brazil and Argentina. A huge and spectacular hydro-electric dam has been built on the river and the area is a very popular tourist attraction. Next week, we are flying into Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina and some say the Paris of South America. It is known for its European architecture and rich cultural life. It is the second largest city in South America after Sao Paulo. It is located on the southern shore of the Rio de la Plata estuary, just across the river from Montevideo in Uruguay and has a population of 13 million. Argentina has grown strong on its meat exports, a product of the rich lands of the Pampas. Argentina has battled with high inflation and a military dictatorship from 1930 for 40 years. There is now significant foreign investment and a constitutional government.
