For years I was a full time VATSIMMER and VATIL member. I used to be part of the staff at VATIL and I ran my own Virtual Airline. As I grew older I started flight training in the real world. I flew for the airlines and today, I run my own business delivering light aircraft all over the world. On one of my Atlantic crossings last year, in a Pilatus PC12, I was asked by Scottish FIR if I had recieved my Oceanic Clearnance. It caught me totally by surprise, I had crossed the ocean before and they NEVER asked me about Ocean Clearance, then I realized, I never crossed the ocean at FL250 before, and at THESE high altitudes, I need a Clearance! Back when I was flying on VATSIM I used to fly ELY001 to NY all the time with full ATC. I used to get oceanic clearnace on VATSIM all the time. So, now, when I was asked that day if I got oceanic clearance, I remembered how I did it on-line in VATSIM and called Shanwick. I asked Shanwick for my clearance in real life the same way I used to ask the virtual Shanwick. It worked. It was then that I truely realized the effect that my online flying has had on my real life flying career. Because of this, I want to encourage more young minds to become more active in VATSIM and take advantage of the immense fun and the knowledge that it can offer. Besides running my own business I am also the Chief Pilot of the former WFC. Today we are the Washington International Flight Academy (WIFA) and are a very different school than what most of you are used to. You can check out the differences in this youtube vid: I spoke with the owners of the school and have arranged that any ACTIVE VATIL member, will be able to rent our Full Motion Flight Simulator for only $60 an hour instead of $75! I will let the VATIL staff determine what is considered an active member of VATIL. (x many hours online per month, etc) I hope to see you around, keep learning and keep flying!
