    Virtual earth

A cool feature from Virtual Earth - 3D Modelling: Here's a view of Toronto's Yonge street( the longest street in the world, btw) My own flat is in one of those buildings Note the super resolution on those sat photos (less than 1m/pixel) , now, if we only had coverage for Israel of that quality, we could have made the most awesome photoscenery...
  2. Of course there is a reason. The "product" is a compilation... the AI models are from AIA, PAI , SKJ and others...the traffic file is the only original component of adobe. Albeit those are all freeware models, do you think Adobe got the permission from the original manufacturers?
  3. Donno where the figures are from, but SKAI 1.1 is a compilation of several packages, Adobe 4.6 being one of which... BTW, as I said, at some point an overload of AI will start working against you, not only will it hit your frames considerably, but you'll end up not seeing them
  4. Perhaps I'm wrong Nir, but that was the case when I had that package on my system. As I said, I'm using the other one at the moment. Best way to check it is to decompile the bgl where the traffic is stored (with AC2005 or TTools) and check if the percentage parameter is fixed or scaled. If it's fixed on whatever percentage, it will still create an all-or-nothing situation.
  5. Adobe are good, Skai are better...... A word of caution though. Either of those packages(especially Adobe, since it always has 100% traffic regardless of the setting in FS) may cause a significant impact on frames. Not only because of the shear volume of traffic, but more significantly if you don't have expended AFCADs to accommodate this traffic. In areas with several large airports in close proximity (e.g London or NY) this can virtually grind your machine to a halt!
  6. yes Not only that, for fsx you can configure "water mask" for better separation between land and water bodies (the water bodies will be those of FS not the photo)
  7. ok, good news on the FSWorldTile front.. I did a little experiment and compiled a strip that stretches from Haifa to Natanya. Here are the results Note that in some of the shots you can see the transition from the photoscenery to the FS scenery. This chunk weighs about 13MB and it took me about 10-15 minutes to compile.... This is NOT Tileproxy, and the scenery is a static "standard" one i.e it has no problem with fast aircraft, and in fact requires no connection to the internet. In its current version (this would be changed in the next ) the software is not capable of processing very large chunks, but there's nothing to stop one from compiling several adjacent areas to get a complete coverage of the country, I believe this should not take more than a few hours to accomplish.
  8. Well, as I expected the google map server had been updated with the new scans. It takes a little modification to the ini file, and the latest map version can be uploaded to the sim. Here are a couple of shots I took from the Haifa area. I forgot to flush some older cached scenery , so a bit of the older maps crept in, but still there's enough to get some impression: Now for the bad news..... Google have lowered their threshold for various "bots" and it tends to recognise TP as such. Consequently it blocks TP out which results in redirects timeouts and eventually tiles not loading. To take those shots, I had to reset my IP twice. I can try and tweak the ini file to make it less "aggressive" but it won't be that simple as the threshold is really VERY low. As an alternative, one can try downloading the tiles with the other software and compile it into a standard scenery. The downside to it is that its probably going to be several Gigabytes in size
  9. The disagreement here, in principle, is over time frames not the basic idea While Ophers limo budget is safe for the foreseeable future, "hundreds of years" seems a bit of a stretch. Its as likely, that in one hundred years there will be no air planes at all, just as they were not there only a hundred years ago.... Again, it boils down to the pace of technological progress. As a whole, the trend is to try and minimize and if possible eliminate the human factor in almost any discipline you come across. Be it aviation, medicine, management or even engineering. The move is from "freestyle" operation to a structured , standardized almost algorithmic approach that is evidence-based. Whether we like it or not, that's the way things are going or at least this is the current trend. Ingenuity is the basis for R&D, the less it is required when it comes to operation - the better we'll all be With that in mind, I can easily envisage unmanned transportation. An exact time frame at which we'll be there is all too hard to predict
  10. Bad example! The human genome was sequenced, not deciphered. It is like holding a book written in Chinese. We now have a complete copy of the book, problem is, that we can't read Chinese yet and we don't understand the meaning behind each hieroglyph. The work on the interpretation of genome sequence is still at a very preliminary stage. Having said all that, 70-% of drugs pending patent are based on recombinant technology (read: genetic engineering). It takes about 7-8 years from the time a drug is patented until it hits the market (if it does) so do expect significant developments in the near future. There are already some examples of recombinant drugs that revolutionized the prognosis for some diseases, predominantly some types of cancer (Chronic Myelogenous Leukaemia for example) The drug Mabtera, used in the treatment of a certain type of lymphoma, is based on a product of a gene that's partly mouse and partly human...I wonder who could imagine that 30 years ago.... To put the whole thing in perspective, less than 55 years had passed since DNA was discovered... What will happen once we learn to read the genomic "chinese" is beyond mine or your wildest imagination . Now, what is that in comparison to a narrow task of developing a system that would monitor and take corrective measures on a vehicle that is already automated for most part?
It all depends how you look at it. To me, the ability to model and compute a chaotic system three days in advance with a fair degree of accuracy is quite impressive in itself. Surely not something that could have even be imagined, say, a hundred years ago. "Futurism" as a whole is divided mostly into two categories The one encompasses almost purely imaginary sci-fi style predictions the other attempts to extrapolate the technological advances and draw some conclusions based on that. Neither, naturally, can predict the introduction of brand new technologies and the effect those might have. Experience shows, however, that the pace at which technology advances is much faster than one would think or that the various experts have predicted so far.
  12. BTW, here's another program based on Tileproxy http://www.fspassengers.com/forum/read. ... 634&t=4634 The main difference is that this one doesn't work online, but rather caches a pre-defined area first. The advantage over Tileproxy in this case is obvious, you shouldn't get blurries if your download speed can't keep up with the speed your aircraft is moving through the scenery. The drawback, I assume, is that if you wish to define a large area, you are going to get a scenery with a massive size I didn't try it yet (or even gone through the the forum posts to get an initial impression), but its an interesting development for those who are interested in satellite-based photoscenery. If anyone is going to give it a go, please report.
מקווה שעכשיו גם חיפה תיראה כמו שצריך. err...not so sure. I don't think its that flexible. I actually know the author had to make changes for the beta 6 in order to include a fourth provider (ask) For Israel, as you know, only google (the most problematic) has hi-res photos. I'll try to put in the GE URL (if I'll manage to find what it is) and see what happens, but I don't give it a great chance. Either way, as I said, I do believe they'll update the map service soon so worst case scenario, we'll just need to wait a little longer search the forum for "tileproxy" , this should clarify things for you
  14. well, Apparently we'll need to wait a little. Those extra areas are not introduced yet to google maps, so there is still that large patch of low-res textures. I guess it will take them a couple of days until they update the maps service (Tileproxy pulls the textures from the maps , not the GE servers)
  15. מיכאל, בתור קצין TILEPROXY חטיבתי... יש עדכונים בגזרה? there's a new beta...didn't try it yet..... This might be a worthy opportunity, once I have some time
  16. that's great! I might fire up tileproxy to see how it looks in the sim!
  17. גם אני חושב...אבל אני לא בטוח....אני רוצה להיות בטוח החיבור לניידים, אני לא רואה שימוש אחר בשקעי חשמל במטוס. Actually its AC or DC sockets for laptop recharges etc.
  18. Whatever the intention was, is irrelevant. Who promises you, that in light of their success in breaking through a different decision would have not been made? Can you base your strategy on the hopes of a limited operation?
  19. We agree then, Opher, that even today, drones can be used for various missions, albeit not all. Although that was not my question....mine was - why should it be impossible to construct a remote cockpit, the advantages of which are obvious. As you might imagine, I don't get any reports from the CSIS, KGB or any agency for that matter, but I should have no problem providing you with literally dozens of examples of arrogance that forced people to take their business elsewhere - only to have the [last] bitter laugh. The stupidity here, is that we keep falling again and again into that hole , yet never learn and never abandon that notorious "we know/are the best" attitude, but I digress...
  20. Opher, I for one don't see why the operator (pilot, if you will) can't sit anywhere outside the actual aircraft. A classical mission for a military aircraft was that of reconnaissance, which is done today by unmanned drones operated from afar. Removing the human from the aircraft itself can offer plenty of advantages. If you have a drone replacing the reconnaissance pilot, why not have a fighter drone operated remotely? with the right technology it could "see" as much as the pilot in the cockpit yet have none of the limitations imposed by human physiology or the risk to human life, it can be operated by more than 1-2 people etc. etc. Regarding dolphins... When I was applying for Canadian residency ( still in Israel) I met this guy, who used to train dolphins for the soviet/russian military. Despite of countless efforts on his part, he was either rejected or most frequently ignored by the IDF. It took the canadians 2 weeks to approve his application (a process that takes 2 years nowadays) which came with an invitation for an interview. We still keep in touch. The man seems to have climbed quickly up the ladder, and is getting paid more than he could have ever dreamt of in Israel. It's all too bad. Israel had lost a highly skilled person, for the education of whom, not a penny was spent. There are unfortunately all too many similar stories.
  21. not at this point, perhaps..but its getting there...
  22. The angle will vary according to the speed (i.e the size of the lateral centrifugal vector you need to cancel out)
  23. No need to complicate it....classical mechanics are good enough to answer the question! all you need to do is get a common reference point. In this case, - Earth. check each time the speed of the wind shield and your helicopter - relative to the earth and you'll get your answer! *Edit* actually Erez already gave the answer...
  24. Check out some of the high ranking officers that carried on with a public career. Can you say they have higher values due to their military background? At best they represent the values of the society they came from - and that's the way it should be. I wouldn't want to see a military that indoctrinates its soldiers, for it would only be natural that any values provided will be those the military is interested in.... Is promotion in the military based on merit alone? i I highly doubt it..unless a lot has changed since my days... Promotion through the lower ranks is mostly a question of time, as you move through higher ranks, politics start playing a more pivotal role. This is not to say that all high ranking officers got their position through political manoeuvring alone, but the military might also not be the best example for a meritocracy either. As for the Big Brother..well..it would be naive to assume its solely an "eastern block" invention. The question is only to what extent and how bluntly can the state do it. If we take the Israeli " Big Brother" for example, I'm quite confident it's very "accomplished" . At any rate..if anyone's worried...there's nothing in the PT blackbox that would spy on you. If anything, it might present one with a not-so-flattering reflection of one's piloting skills
  25. "Project Tupolev" planes have a black-box that records continuously over 20 different parameters, including vertical speed and G-load. There are also tools to analyse the eventual output file and determine, among others, those figures at various stages. The black box can theoretically be transferred to any other plane, although I never gave it a try myself. It would involve installing not only the black-box gauge, but also all the PT instruments that provide the parameters for it (altimeters variometers AoA gauges etc.) into a separate subpanel or mini-panel. Alternatively, you can simply use one of those PT planes - they come with everything inside straight from the factory
