  1. Opher, It does not have to be so. Are glass cockpits the holy grail for quality? and even if so, do you exclude the possiblity for a GROUP of dedicated people to engage in a "project" that would just keep improving over time? I'm sure you can easily come up with quite a few quality freeware packages - if you are having trouble doing so - I can help Now imagine what if the developement did not stop with the release, but was perpetualy sustained? This IMO can be feasible with a freeware development TEAM. Just think of all the collective effort being put together in one single day in all the downloads available on avsim, flightsim.com and the likes. What's missing is the fertile ground for such teams to form. Sadly, I'm aware only of the one team I belong to. The only explanation I can find to the fact that we are (AFAIK) a singular fenomenon, is the shift of focus by the PUBLIC and those that dictate the public opinion (read : major websites), from the freeware developers and the "file library" - to payware and the affiliation to commercial developers. Please correct me if I'm wrong @ Ilan I feel strange having to defend PMDG... but: I realy don't know where breakthroughs can be made or what revolutionary features one would like to see. can you give a few examples of such features? (this is a pure informative question, no sarcasm intended!) To date, I believe most big projects attempt to provide as comprehensive a simulation as possible, rather than focus on a super-gauge, Simply because most of these "super gauges" were already developed in one variation or another. as such, the 747 does a good job - if you wish, I can elaborate . As for pricing/marketing - I agree with you and Oren, but this is a separate issue altogether. //Michael
  2. I agree with Opher about the change of trand, but I don't see the change in terms of pricing, but rather in a shift from freeware to payware. In terms of timing, the notion of "payware" was virtually non existant in the days of FS98. I'm sure you still remember Eric Ernsts panel for the 767 (which later became PIC) - 100% freware. BTW, that 747 sim you have mentioned is NOT an FS addon, and is still considered, 13 years later, a benchmark in civil aircraft simulation, but that's beside te point. Anyway, PIC 767 and the DF737-400 started a new era. in that they brought an entirely different dimention to procedure simulation and introduced a new level of complexity and detail. They had also introduced another concept - that of payware, or rather payware to the "masses" - which Opher had already expended upon. This trend started to gather significant momentum with FS2002 and is reaching unprecedented dimentions with FS2004 as servers are shutting down not being able to withstand the demand. Currently people are living from payware to paayware and would consider nothing else. And that's IMHO, the sad side of it all. The veterans surely remember what the "community" was in the days of FS98. A lot of the innocense and the altruistic spiritis gone and has been replaced by commercialism - all too often a cynical one. . serious freeware development had almost stopped, and those that do exist, do so almost underground - promoted by noone and often looked down upon by users. I wonder if the two can't coexist? can't freeware pose a worthy competition for payware developers, or would FS2006 be the final coup-de-gras for freeware? //Michael
  3. Hi, While I too dislike PMDG's marketing strategy, and think it might be a bit overpriced (BTW they did not set the precedent - Frolovs Dash 8 did!) , I don't think its fair to bash the product before it had reached the final state. Some may remember the state of the 737 when it first came out , and what it is today. I have nothing but respect for their developement team, and I'm sure they'll be able to Iron out the issues they have, and probablty add some more features. Some of the "novelties" are not in the gauges - but in the flight dynamics. At any rate it's too early IMO, to either praise or condemn the product. It would have been better to include the 747 in next years contest. What stood out for me in this years BZ awards, is the lack of any freeware developers!! out of 13 awards only 3&1/2 are for freeware developers! Maybe I'ts a misjustice, but I can't avoid the feeling that a commercial site is handing out awards to affiliated commercial companies. //Michael
  4. [[quote name="Yahav Barzil יהב תוריד AEU' date='זה ישפר לך את המסלולים והטקסי[/quote] It will indeed, but it also might introduce some very heavy stutters (especialy ver 7) so be careful and make sure you have a backup //Michael
  5. This doesn't mean the company is going to disappear. US air, united, air Canada are among the companies that filed for the so-called "chapter 11" they are all still here, but restructured.
  6. not sure about the republic. do you intend to visit NI as well? //Michael
  7. not only him..... 1387921 days here..... not too bright a prospect for a relatively old fa$t like myself.... //Michael
  8. Hi fellas! Please, please....reduce the size of that counter, or put it somewhere less conspicuous. not trying to be a party pooper, but the constant flickering can drive you nuts. Thanx again //Michael
  9. Not trying to reopen the question "FS - a game or not?" as it had already been beaten to death on many a forea. But as we all strive for realisn, lets be realistic about this one.... Fs will not make you a pilot more than an automobil simulator will make a driver out of someone who had never sat behind a steering wheel. what can it do? familiarize you with aviation terms and concepts, with ATC concepts, with cockpits you'd never set a foot in etc. make you a pilot out....hmm....too pretentious a statement if you're asking me... //Michael
  10. if you can scan the actual text, I might be able to tell you what it says
  11. cqdx...cqdx....
  12. I'm sure one Million people who had to be evacuated would disagree with you.....
  13. and how would you do that on a "simple" ship? it too has a gyroscop based course system, navigation system, horizon (i.e pitch meter) , autopilot....... Readings are taken from each device through a certain interface and could be used for whatever- the adjustment of external gyro systems among other. //Michael
  14. ok, I'll follow up.... I would assume then, that one would need to align the gyros initialy, either to the magnetic or true heading. How is that done? Also, if either of you guys can elaborate a little on the drift correction using a beacon (the one VFS4 mentioned in the first post)) thanx again for your knowledgable answers! //Michael
  15. ok, interesting...so, what would the selector switch at the bottom right do? (707) and what are the black buttons for? //Michael
  16. Perhaps someone has a clue what do these things do... from the 707 and from the DC8 //Michael
  17. Hi Oren, Actualy it does... I rarely use chase view ( can't care less about external models and the likes) so I'd be surprised iif I was using external view at the time. . unless it also applies to VC view ... Best regards //Michael
  18. Hi, . Every now and then I get an annoying building crash at the vicinity of that yellow building in front of the old terminal is there any way to eliminate the hidden "structure" over there? //Michael
  19. In that case you're right, coding an (almost) fully functional FMC is a daunting task for a single developer, never mind having the rest of the panel to match it. For quality, there are a couple of freeware packages that come to mind: O. Frolovs dash 8 B. Grabowskis ERJ A. Capts MD11 and surely a few other that I don't recall at this late hour ehh, I could have mentioned there one more package for a certain 3 holer, but I won't keep beating my own drum...) //Michael
  20. And since when is an FMC a synonim for quality?
  21. CS are great in the graphic department, but that's about their only strength. They make beautiful models and excellent bitmaps. the gauge programming is avarage to say the least, but the real fall comes with the flight dynamics. So far those had been horrific! Their support is also somewhat awkward, to put it mildely Who knows, maybe they'll redeem themselves with this one....but I would most certainly leave others to try it first //Michael
  22. Baruchi, I would be the last one to tell you that FS needs no improvement, but you need to keep in mind a couple of things 1( FS is a single platform for a wide range of aircraft - ranging from an ultralight to a 747 or An 225. 2) the "hadrcore simmers" are but a small fraction of FS sales. You can't expect MS to go into great lengths to accomodate a limited group of customers. Having said that, I can tell you that most of the so called "FS limitations" can be overcome! - the problem is that many developers won't bother 'cause most simmers (yes, even among the "hardcore" group))won't know a true-to-life model, if it came and bit them in the a$$ I, for one, am interested if there are additional core features in the next FS release best regards //Michael PS what do you want them to do with TOD or TOC?? - just curious
  23. The wilco product will be more about the visual model rather than panel or systems. not sure it would offer any exceptional extra value over the currently available (freeware) packages //Michael
  24. Perhaps that is the case, but finding a job is certainly not easy - a friend of mine who used to work for Jetsgo, until it went bankrupt can testify to that
  25. You think so Shmulik? I have found that if anything , one would aquire bad habits its ok if you want to practice holding patterns , or instruments flight. but in many other aspects you're doomed if you'll attempt to fly the ral thing the way you fly the sim. I just wonder, how many ppl do you think use the sims rudder when landing in a 152 or 172 for instance //Michael
